Chandrataal Lake
Reaching Chandra taal:
There are two paths leading to the lake; from Batal and from Kunzum Pass (Kunzum La). However, the Kunzum La path is accessible only on foot, on the other hand the Batal route is accessible on foot, by private or tourist vehicles as well as mountain bikes. From Batal:
This is the longer of the two routes at a distance of 17 kms from the Chandratal lake. However, it is the more convenient of the two as it is frequented by several tourist vehicles and also has very basic but affordable bed and breakfast facilities at starting point (Batal).
Its a bumpy ride due to poor road conditions, with crisscrossing streams along the way. The Chandra River remains to your right for most part of the journey.
No public or private buses travel this route. Either take a private car or hire a tourist car or taxi all the way from Manali / Solang valley all the way upto Chandrataal Lake (1 km away from the lake) since there are no other towns with booking facilities en route. Private vehicles from Manali to Chandrataal would cost anywhere from Rs.3500 onwards. Bargain!!
Another option is to take a public bus or a taxi from Manali to Batal approximately 120kms. Click here for details on that route or for the Manali to Kaza route. And then trek or hitch a ride from Batal to Chandra Taal. Here's how hitching a ride works:
