The Shimla route is the more preferred of the two entries into Spiti and Kinnaur. In general, this route should be taken in the following circumstances:
Starting from Shimla, you can either take a bus /cab directly to Sangla, which is a diversion from the Reckong Peo route; or you can take a bus /cab to Reckong Peo (district HQ for Kinnaur).
Shimla to Sangla is a distance of 195kms and approximate duration is 10 hours. Chitkul, a quaint little village with friendly people is another 24kms from Sangla. In comparison to Chitkul, Sangla is quite a busy place. However, during heavy snowfall the roads might remain shut beyond Sangla. State-run buses heading to Sangla or Chitkul may begin from Shimla or from Chandigarh. Another option maybe to get off at Karcham (52kms before Chitkul) and switch buses for Sangla. Bus schedules can be found on the HRTC website(Himachal Road Transport Corporation)- can be a little inaccurate, so not sure how reliable it is.
Shimla to Reckong Peo is 199km and takes a little over 10 hours by bus. Just 10 kms above Reckong Peo is another beautiful village, Kalpa. A bus from Reckong Peo plies towards Kalpa are regular frequency and costs only Rs.10 for a half an hour ride. Kalpa has a lot of offer in terms of nature walks, view of the Kinner Kailash peaks with the Shivling-like rock formation.
Reckong Peo to Kaza is again 195kms but takes 11 hours due to poorer road conditions in upper Kinnaur and Spiti.
Beyond Kaza, the road conditions deteriorate as you travel north. The HRTC buses from Kaza bus stand go to Manali and Reckong Peo. Normally theres just one bus for these routes and they travel packed from the first stop itself. However, shared taxis are always an option for those willing to spend a little more. For example, a bus ticket for Kaza to Manali is approximately Rs.200, but a shared taxi will cost you Rs.800 onwards.
Buses heading to Manali will stop at Losar, Kunzum Pass, Batal, Rohtang Pass and Marhi.
The ordinary HRTC buses are a very economical way of transport throughout Himachal Pradesh and to neighboring cities. As a rule of thumb, you can estimate your bus fare to be approximately Rs1.10 per km (as of Aug 2012). Deluxe buses and volvos will cost slightly more.
