Spiti and Kinnaur

Occupying the north-eastern corner of Himachal Pradesh are two districts of Spiti and Kinnaur, bordering Tibet.

Districts of Himachal Pradesh

       SPITI:

  • Land: Spiti is a mountainous desert with a very low population density. Considerable portion of Spiti lies above altitudes of 4500m.  The stretch from shortly after the Rohtang Pass up to Middle Kinnaur is devoid of vegetation and barely receives any rainfall.  The landscape is quite uniform throughout, with rivers and rivulets on a landscape of dry, brown, muddy, towering rocky mountains capped with snow.

  • Ideal time to visit: June to October

  • Climate: Spring begins in March, however the upper regions of Spiti, beyond Kaza and Losar remain inaccessible due to heavy snowfall until July when the Kunzum La opens. Peak summer in Spiti is mid June or early July onwards, when daytime temperatures reach upto 30°C. At higher altitudes such as Kunzum La and Chandratal, this feels more like 50°C during the daytime. Sunscreen, head-cover,acclimatisation and ample water supply is a MUST these places. The evenings even during peak summer time are typified  by chilly high-speed winds, and snowfall is not uncommon even in June. Carry Light woolens.

  • KINNAUR:

Kinnaur is further divided in Upper, Middle and Lower Kinnaur regions. As opposed to Spiti, the Middle and Lower Kinnaur regions are rich in flora and fauna. However, the upper region shares characteristics similar to topography and climate of Spiti. As you make your way towards Shimla, the altitude drops and the vegetation cover gets denser. Middle Kinnaur is however a perfect balance between hospitable weather and at the same time sparse crowds. Its dotted with villages inhabited by apple and apricot cultivating locals known for their hospitality, selflessness and honesty.

The summers in Middle Kinnaur are quite pleasant and in Lower Kinnaur, quite warm. Rainfall during June to September is common. Overall, the summertime temperatures are quite moderate with cool nights.
